Pujas

A puja is a tantric ritual performed in relation to a specific Buddha. As is tradition in Tibetan Buddhism, patrons ask for pujas to be done in their name. This is muatually beneficial since it sustains the monastery and simultaneously brings benefit to the people requesting the puja.

wrathful tara puja

This Rite was initially composed by Acharya Nagarjuna. The lineage later came to Atisha Dipankara and he lightly edited the ritual into its present form.

The ritual employs a three-dimensional frame with colorful thread housing a model of a celestial mansion and spiritual symbols that are used to trap demons and ghosts. At the conclusion of the rite it is burned amidst prayers and music.

The great benefits of this rite are mentioned in many texts. Here are some of the better known benefits that are gained by the performers of the rite and the donors:

It will help one escape from the many kinds of harms caused by nagas. It will help one develop authority, power and prosperity. The environment will become auspicious, peaceful and favorable. It will help eliminate many kinds of epidemics and long-lasting deceases. It will liberate humans and cattle from any sickness. It will help one appease insanity, psychosis, savage behavior, mental illness and the like. It is also said that this rite is best for the person who has committed five heinous crimes or severe actions. Similarly, those who have deteriorated their spiritual commitments, vows, pledges and promises, should participate in this Repelling Rite.

Tse-lha Nam-sum – Ritual of the Three Longevity Deities

By performing this prayer we can purify non-virtues and obscurations, along with pacifying many obstacles to temporary and ultimate fulfillment. The detail benefits are explained in each of the corresponding Amitayus, White Tara and Vijaya’s scriptures.

Gya Zhi – The Hundred and Four Ritual.

This ritual was inherited from the great translator Bari Lama.   It is said that once the god Indra was stricken with a serious illness. After some discussion, many gods appealed to Lord Buddha for help.  Buddha told them he was overtaken by demons and performed the ritual of Hundred and Four. The Indra was freed from suffering and the ritual came to be known as the Hundred and Four Rite.

Duth Dok – Rite for Avoiding Devils;

This ritual is based on Prajnaparamita Hridaya which encompasses the complete meaning of all the Prajnaparamita Sutras: Satashasrika (One Hundred Thousand Verse), the large Vimsatisahas (Twenty Thousand Verse), medium sutra and the Astasahasarikas (Short Transcendental Wisdom Sutras).

The main objective of this ritual is to get rid all the varieties of the four devils:

1.      the evil of aggregates

2.      the evil of afflictions

3.      the evil of death

4.      the evil son of gods

The transmission lineage for this ritual is still uninterrupted since the time of Lord Buddha.
