As prophesied by Guru Padma Sambhava and Lord Atisha, Khon Konchog Gyalpo built the first Temple named the Gorum Zimchi Karpo in 1078 on an auspicious location below a white patch of earth. This marks the beginning of the name “Sakya’. His son Sachen kunga Nyingpo was the founder of the Sakya School which is widely known as one of the four major Tibetan Schools. Like other traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, a number of branch lineages emerged from it long before the Chinese invasion. Majority of the first batch resident monks of Sakya Monastery, Mundgod, are from Ngor monastic Institution which is situated near to Zhigatse.

This institution was founded with the initial 28 member monks shifted from Buxa Lama Transit Camp in 1969. Since then, the sole projection of this community is to impart the traditional teachings to the younger generations to preserve them and to implant a firm root in conformity with the ambitions of the institution.
